Facilitated by Stewart Cubley

26th Year of The Painting Experience at Hui Ho'olana!

The Molokai Intensive provides the rare opportunity for total immersion in the timeless presence of process painting. The foundation of the retreat is nine uninterrupted days of deep relaxation and creative awakening. The painting process, the nurturing environment, the small group interactions, the quiet, beautiful surroundings: The combination of all of these help to quiet the heart, soothe the soul and allow for an opening to the unknown on many levels.

The Moloka’i Intensive, Stewart's longest and most personalized group program, has proven to be a powerful catalyst for change by all who've experienced it.

Tuition: $2500 ~ Your tuition includes all art materials, nine days of facilitated painting sessions with Stewart Cubley, daily group discussion circles in a small, supportive community, video presentations in the evening that support the painting practice, one or two planned group excursions, your paintings mailed home for you after the workshop, a followup email circle to make your post-retreat experience as rich as possible.

Room & Board is extra: See Accommodations below.

Have special dietary needs? Please see Hui Food Service below.

Accommodations

The fee for accommodations and meals is $225/night per person. This is for shared accommodations (two people per room), all meals included.

Accommodations are provided in two locations: You will stay in one of the comfortable rooms on either the first or second floor of the historic hunting lodge that was originally part of the Cooke family estate; or in one of the numerous double-occupancy cabins between the lodge and the painting studio, surrounded by tropical rain forest.

Accommodations, in both the lodge and the cabins, are shared with one other person. All bathrooms are shared. (Requests for private accommodations are assigned based on space availability; the cost for private accommodations is double the cost of shared).

Hui Food Service

Professional chefs prepare the exquisite food at the Hui. The menu is exceptional! Fresh tropical fruits and vegetables from the organic gardens are featured, as are native fish, homemade desserts and other exotic specialties that have become such a memorable part of the Hui experience. The lodge serves coffee that is grown right on Molokai, as well as a selection of teas and juices. Soda and alcoholic beverages are not provided, but you may bring your own. (There is a good wine store in town).

  • We distinctly do NOT attend to special dietary needs.
  • We do offer a very fresh, healthy menu that is primarily vegetarian. Typically 3 meats (1 chicken, 1 grass fed beef and 1 fish) are offered during a 7-day workshop.
  • Homemade yogurt, granola, breads, deserts, etc.-
  • Fresh produce from our garden and the local farmers.
  • We do provide GF options, but not always for each meal.
  • Generally speaking, participants will weave through the buffet line (there are tent signs by the dishes) and select from the foods they can eat.
  • For those that have more restrictive diets, such as purely vegan, we will not be able to accommodate your needs. And our capacity for providing refrigeration for guests ‘special dietary’ items is extremely limited.
  • We do not have an allergen free kitchen for life threatening allergies such as peanuts or seafood. We do our best to prevent any cross contamination if we are made aware of allergies in advance.
  • Dietary questions asked of each participant in their online enrollment. It is important that all participants complete this enrollment form at least a month prior to the workshop. We need to purchase any foods that are to be shipped by barge to arrive in time for the workshop. Organizing food on an island as small and isolated as ours does require extensive pre-workshop planning.

About Moloka'i

  • In general the residents of Molokai are a friendly, welcoming community. During covid we have had very few travellers to our island and have just opened up this past summer. You're showing respect and compassion by wearing masks whenever you are in public areas (inside and outside) is appreciated. Some of the families on island do benefit in some small ways financially by the island visitors and are grateful for this.
  • A lot of the typical visitor attractions remain available with discretion being advised when it comes to numbers of people in an area. We have several beautiful beaches that often have very few people on them. Keeping space around other people or groups is highly recommended for all.
  • Unlike other Hawaiian islands, Molokai does not have a lot of tourist attractions. The visitors that come to our island do so more to experience the lack of development and quiet, slower lifestyle here. Activities such as surfing, paddle boarding, kayaking, diving, fishing, whale watching and hiking are what the locals do for activities. There are often vendors who can facilitate these activities. You will need to confirm the availability of these types of activities if your workshop has provided time to go off property.

About Hui Ho'olana

The Hui Ho’olana (referred to simply as "the Hui"), provides a magical experience of "old Hawaii". Visitors from the local community - shamans, musicians, dancers and storytellers - make their way to the Hui during our workshop to share their inspiration, music and wisdom. We're the only group in residence during this ten-day period, and we're welcomed like family by the down-to-earth Hui staff who are devoted to providing a quality experience on all levels.

In between painting sessions, we'll go on excursions to the untrammeled beaches of Moloka'i and into the small town of Kaunakakai to browse local shops. We build in plenty of quiet time as well, so you can enjoy everything this gorgeous, seventy-five acre property has to offer: go for a swim in the pool, soak in one of the outdoor claw-foot tubs, hike one of the trails through the Hui Ho'olana's native botanical garden, book a bodywork session, curl up with a book on the wrap-around, ocean-view deck or take a nap in the organic vegetable garden.

The Hui, situated in a lush part of the island at 1300’ above sea level, offers an expansive view of the islands of Maui and Lanai and always seems to be graced by a nearby rainbow. Though the views of the ocean are spectacular, we are 30 - 45 minutes from the nearest safe swimming beaches. We coordinate at least one half-day beach excursion as a group and a rental car (possibly shared) can help in making additional excursions on your own.

Location

Hui Ho'olana, Mile marker 3, Kalae Highway, Molokai, HI 96757

On Hwy 470, head uphill toward the Kalaupapa Lookout.

At the 3 mile marker, take a right. The driveway says "private drive" and is lined with short palms.  Drive to the end.

Travel

The Painting Experience staff is happy to support you in making your travel arrangements, so your arrival and departure are as easy as possible and your travel experience is worry free. You will be personally greeted at the Moloka’i airport with the traditional plumeria lei and will be transported to and from the Hui Ho’olana retreat center.

Travel to the island:
• We encourage all travelers who will be flying 6 or more hours on their way to
Molokai to consider an overnight stay either on Molokai at Hotel Molokai or on the island they fly through. This would be Oahu or Maui. Many of our guests have
shared how nice this extra step has been as it allows them a private time to refuel
their energy, sleep in if desired, see a little of another island. This will make it
easier to arrive at the Hui after 2 pm (when the Hui is ready to receive guests) and before 6 pm (when opening circle starts);
• There is only one small airline that serves Molokai at this time. It is Mokulele Air run by Southern Airlines. All of the planes seat 8 passengers and fly out of Terminal 3 on Oahu and the interisland terminal on Maui. It is highly likely that there will be
several Hui workshop guests on the same flight due to the limited flights during
that window of time.

ARRIVAL: You're welcome to arrive at the Hui Ho'olana anytime after 2:00 PM (no early arrivals, please). You have two options: you may choose to rent a car and make the ten minute drive to the retreat center on your own. If you'd like to come and go as you wish throughout the retreat, this may be a good option for you. A rental car is not required, however - we will have a vehicle and we will pick you up at the airport, drive you into town as needed during the week, drive together on group excursions and bring you to the airport again on departure day. If your flight to Molokai arrives prior to 2:00 PM, you may take a taxi to the hotel Molokai and we will gladly pick you up there.

DEPARTURE: Check out is by 12:00 noon on your departure day. We will take you to the airport any time on Departure day, whether your flight leaves before or after 12:00 noon.

Directions From Hotel Moloka'i

  • Just past Mile Marker 3 turn into the driveway and follow it to the gate
  • Pull up and hot the button to open it from the driver's side and go to the end of the road
