PAINT
The paint you are using in the studio is a professional grade liquid tempera manufactured by Prang. Prang has recently been bought by a new corporation and the paint has been reformulated. We are not satisfied with the new formula, and we have tested all the other existing brands. The one we like best is the Studio Series Tempera by Utrecht.

It's best to mix paints into a covered container or jar so you have enough to use for a while. Start with the lighter color and slowly add darker colors a bit at a time until you get the shade you desire. The parts refer to any unit of measure.

Yellow-Orange: 8 parts Yellow: 1 part Orange

Red-orange (Flame): 8 parts orange: 1 part Magenta

Yellow-green: 5 parts yellow: 1/2 part green

Yellow Ochre: 6 parts yellow: 1/2 brown (you can also add a teeny bit of red to warm it up more)

Bloodroot: 1 part red: 1/16 black

Adobe: 3 yellow/1 orange/1/2 red/1/2 brown

Pink, Sky Blue and Gray: Start with white, slowly add a tiny bit of: Magenta for Pink, Turquoise for Lt. Blue, Black for Gray.

PAPER (Order by Credit Card or Check)
The paper used in the studio is not art paper. It is bookmaking paper, which we have specially cut for us into large sheets. A great deal of research has gone into the best paper to use with the Prang paints, and this is it. Regular drawing paper will buckle and get wavy, watercolor paper is much too absorbent (and expensive). Sold in packs of 20 sheets, size 20"x26". $15 per pack.

BRUSHES
The fine brushes we are using are made in France by Isabey using a centuries-old process. We are told that Isabey brush makers apprentice for six years to produce these exceptionally durable watercolor brushes. Each brush is made by hand! If well cared for, they will last for many years — more than making up for the cost of continually replacing cheap brushes that wear out or leave hairs all over your painting.
