This program is for those who want to explore their creative process in a small group and exquistely secluded environment. Here, everyone is a beginner; all levels of experience are welcome, even if you have never picked up a paintbrush. The goal is free - expression, with the emphasis on in-depth self-exploration leading to pivotal insight and authentic change. This 7-day retreat is an opportunity to embark on the greatest of all human journeys embracing the vibrant, driving force of your own creative spirit and confidently following it.
This pristine setting provides the opportunity to really make a break from the pace and pressure of busy lives. The foundation of this retreat is deep relaxation and creative awakeningin the painting process, in the nurturing environment, in small group interactions and in opening to the unknown on many levels.
Hui Ho’olana is truly a magical experience of ‘old Hawaii’ that gently yet insistently quiets the heart and soothes the soul. Stewart’s workshop is the only one held on the grounds during this period, and the entire staff is devoted to providing a quality experience on all levels. We feel very lucky to have the opportunity to offer this residential retreat to you, and we believe it’s a perfect safe haven for the profound personal inquiry at the heart of the painting experience.
"Being back home I'm changed. I'm functioning in the world differently...
more spontaneously... more honest with myself...
and noticing some things,
like how I am usually stopped by an inner negativity that lies to me.
I find myself asking myself where the energy is... and thinking about completion.
I am sure I will be digesting this for a very long time."
Food
Professional chefs prepare the exquisite food at the ‘Hui’; fresh tropical fruits and vegetables from their organic gardens are featured, as are native fish and other exotic specialties that have become such a memorable part of the Hui experience. You will stay either in the historic hunting lodge that was originally part of the Cooke family estate (who at one time owned a good portion of the island of Moloka’i) or in one of the numerous comfortably rustic cabins spread throughout the tropical rain forest. The painting studio, a tranquil yurt surrounded by native Hawaiian flowers and trees, provides an idyllic, sacred space for your internal exploration.
The Hui - situated in a lush part of the island - has an expansive view of Maui, Lanai and the surrounding islands, and always seems to be graced by a nearby rainbow. During breaks, we relax in the rock swimming pool, hike, snorkel, and explore the island beaches. Shopping is done in small, friendly businesses in Kaunakakai, the largest town, and in the villages of Kualapu'u and Maunaloa. Your experience at the Hui will include an educational slide show on the island’s hidden treasures by Rik Cooke, former National Geographic photographer and acknowledged expert on Hawaiian history, as well as a story-telling /demonstration on the spiritual roots of the Hula by native Hawaiian dancers. Massage is also available.
Travel
The Painting Experience staff will support you to make your coming and going as easy as possible. You will be personally greeted at the Moloka’i airport with the traditional plumeria lei and will be transported to and from Hui Ho’olana. We will consult with you concerning your detailed travel plans, and will inform you of what clothes and other items to bring. Our staff will be on call to assist you with all the details that can make your travel experience worry free.
Molokai is a 25 minute flight from Honolulu and Maui. We suggest using Island Air for the local flights between islands. They are reliable and have many flights to and from Moloka'i each day. You will arrive in the afternoon of the first day and depart Moloak'i after lunch on the last day. Arrangements can be made for island accommodations either before or after the workshop, please inquire.

What to Bring
Photo Tour
At Hui Ho’olana you can look forward to an experience that is simple and close to the earth. Pretend you are going to camp and remember to bring the following: a flashlight, water bottle, slip off shoes, a beach towel (we have personal towels) and either checks or cash as we do not take credit cards for either our Gallery or massage therapist and we don’t sell toiletries, so be sure to bring your own. On arrival day, please come no earlier than 2pm. Before 2, the staff is preparing for you and cannot accommodate early arrivals. Check out is by 12 noon on your departure day. That is when the staff begins their ‘down time’ so your timely departure is appreciated.
Be prepared for natural, uneven walking trails as you go to the meeting hall, the shower houses, cabins and the main lodge. This requires some fitness and a willingness and ability to hike short distances up a gradual incline. For those staying in cabins, and for the staff as well, it is a short walk to the bathrooms. Bathing under the stars in one of our outdoor tubs is an opportunity not to be missed!

It is very quiet on Molokai and especially at the Hui. As is typical in the tropics, the buildings are single wall construction. Unless you are a couple, you will probably have a roommate. Therefore, simple noises can seem louder than usual. If you are a sensitive sleeper, bring earplugs. We can supplynice yoga mats for stretching. There are no guest laundry facilities. We suggest you bring things that can be washed by hand and line dried.
The Hui is known for its fabulous homegrown salads and delicious healthy cuisine. Meals are vegetarian plus fresh local fish. The food is exceptional! However, we do not have the appropriate staff or facilities to accommodate unusual dietary needs. If you are on a restricted diet of any kind, please bring what you need and plan on supplementing your meals.
Karma Yoga represents time offered to support the needs of your retreat and is an intrinsic part of living in community. You will each be given a small job like sweeping a deck or wiping down the tables after meals. We greatly appreciate your willingness to help in this way during your stay at Hui Ho’olana.
Be sure to check your bags all the way to Molokai, your destination is Ho’olehua Airport, and your baggage sticker should say MKK on it. Once here, if you are taking a taxi or renting a car - drive up the Kalae Hwy (470), take a right at the 3 mile marker and go to the end of the private drive. Your mailing address is: PO Box 280, (Or for UPS: 3 mile marker, Kalae Hwy), Kualapuu, Moloka'i, HI 96757. The emergency number at the lodge is (808) 567-6403. Phone calls are time sensitive, so bring your cell phone. Be sure to email us your arrival time, as we may be picking you up at the airport.
All together this is a full experience of earth, sky and community with na ohana hoaloha a family of friends. We look forward to being with you and welcoming you home!
